History of the Wendy Larks Foundation
We lost Wendy July, 31, 2001 after a 5 year battle with breast cancer, During those years Wendy formed some very positive and definite ideas about what was needed to fight cancer and help victims of the disease. Among these were the need for early detection, the need to help victims develop a positive attitude in fighting the disease and for the victims to develop high self esteem. For 5 years Wendy lectured to groups and also daily practiced what she preached.
After her death her mother, Barbara Larks Tucker, and her fiancé, Lyle Dekowitz, decided that her work should be continued. With Lyle doing the vast amount of research, leg work, paper work and recruiting of family, both Wendy’s and his, friends and concerned people, in the fall of 2003, The Wendy Larks Foundation was recognized as a charitable 501 © (3) organization by the Internal Revenue Service. Then the work really began.
For the next 5 years, with Lyle’s sister Susan as chairperson, Lyle as treasurer, members of both families and friends working as volunteers the fund raising began and The Celebration of Life was born.
The Celebration of Life was a fund raising extravaganza featuring donated live music, a silent auction of donated items and a raffle featuring scores of donated items. The five Celebrations of Life netted $89,000 which was donated to various organizations.
